AS Media Studies

Media Studies is very different to G.C.S.E Media, Media studies is a complex way of analysing a number of things such as magazines and films. If i started AS Media again i would really get to know what the topics are about., and also do a lot more research on films. If i did this it would have given me more of an in-sight into the Media industry.

My advice to the first years, when doing your course work take time in planning and make sure you do a lot of research in order, that u know what you are doing. When making your film make sure you chose a group that's reliable and that puts the same amount of work in as you do. You will find it hard without people working with you as you will need to do camera work and also editing on such a short time.

Another bit of advice when starting to do your filming, give your tap either to the teacher so you know it will be with you every time you want to film, or give it to someone who is reliable and you can trust to remember it. One tip when filming make sure your lighting is okay as sometime on camera it may seem darker than it is. Another, major problem may be the music matching up with the filming, you have to be careful when selecting certain music just to make sure it actually links in and people understand it. Last but not lest, when filming makes sure you film loads of clips, because when you come to edit you will find your film get shorter and shorter and you will have to fill up the space in order to get the timing right.

Good luck in your first year wish you all the best

Diaries :Written in Blood

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayGQ8-wbbwM

The website above is some research i have done on a short film with a rape scene in

Diaries written in blood is about a teenage who keeps on getting raped by her mothers other half. It's mainly set in her bathroom where she tells her written diary about the horrible events that happens between her mothers lover and her. During this short film the victim talks about her dad and mentions how he shouldn't of left her mother and her. Basically blaming the dad in the way of whats happened with her up bringing. I love how it's been directed to make everyone know he started with the girl as soon as he moved in with her mother and forced her to have sex. He made he lose her virginity, and her innocence which she cries over in pain.

They use a number of techniques during this short film to draw the audience in, they use different shading when the girl is getting raped and  the 'stepfather' steps in and covers the sunlight from the windows to show her facial expression as well as hearing partly he's voice with echos a couple of times to get that effect. During this scene you can see her curled up looking over her blood in disperse with the man, however to make her look more vulnerable she should be curled up in the corner of her bed to make her look vulnerable  and this will then show her level of maturity.

At the begging of the film, you're not quit sure what's going on, till you start putting the girls problems together, i like the scene with her mother as it shows the audience that's she angry with her because her boyfriend is forcing her to have sex. It also shows us how she cannot talk to her mother about this as she doesn't want the situation to get worse.

The ending of the film is a great way to end as the person decides she cannot kill herself so she has to kill him to get all the pain to stop. they use a number of thriller conventions during this short film. The lighting changes in the most important parts like the 'stepfather'. I like the black and white effect on the diary and the pencil. it's great how the music comes into that part and makes it all dramatic. The use fast music to make the audience know something is going on.

Unborn Poster

 http://www.filmofilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/unborn-poster_s.jpg

This website shows a poster of a film, which is called The Unborn. The person in the poster is shown to the audience that the lady is scared and afraid of something. The poster makes the lady look in pain by her facial expressions and the way her body is pined against the wall. The water that appears on her body makes her look vulnerable.

The title ‘the unborn’ and the writing on the poster makes it’s seem to the audience that the lady is injected with something she doesn’t want i.e. ‘It wants to be born’. The title and the writing indicate the lady has no control of her body and she being controlled by a drug or a form a human being. The title ‘UNBORN’ make the audience think it’s automatically a child, however by using the word ‘IT’, creates a mystery to what actually the context means by this. There is one main point which draws the audience into the film. This is the word 'UNBORN' as it's already creating a enigma.

The poster attracts the right audience as it has thought careful about what image should be placed onto the poster as it needs to attract the audinece. The effects they use on the poster such as the water and the words like 'IT WANTS TO BE BORN'. (This sells the product so people will go and see the films)

About a Girl

The short film 'About a Girl' was based on a girl who was 13 years of age, who lived in Manchester (Mise en sen). The girl is from a lower class background that has hardly any money. She lives with her mum and sister, as her father and her mother spilt up when she was little. The short film is based around her life as a teenage girl as well as as the way her family treats her. The film starts with the girl singing to Kylie, in that time she was one of the biggest pop stars. The camera work used in the film is mainly Juxta positioning, as this sets a feel of whats going on as it jumps to things that have happened to the current stage she is at in her life.

The film is non linear as it flash's back to the pass as you can see when she talks about her father playing football and going to the pub. This gives the audience an understanding of what it is like to be her. At the end of the film it creates an enigma, as we want to find out more about why the baby has be thrown in the river.

"The mood was meant to get darker as the story progressed but without telegraphing anything to the audience, just to influence them. We started heavily over filtering, an 85B plus heavy Coral, and then gradually reduced the filter combination so that we were almost uncorrected at the end. We then corrected these back to "normal" which meant that we start with very little blue and end up with very little red."

As you can see from above the directors concentrated on the colouring of the short film as they wanted to make the audience feel what the girl was thinking. This made the mood of the film very strange and at the end when she was talking about the puppy and she stops it's creates the enigma as we not sure whats going to happen. At the end of the short film it ends with the girl singing and the scenery starts to lighten, which then tells the audience the mood has now changed and things can get back to normally.

This short film is a great way to show people there are a lot of people that have baby's and can hide the fact they are pregnant from there own family. it's great the way they use a 13 year old girl and the way it shows us her background makes it almost real life to other people and then people can relate to the and think "ooh i know how she feels". This film is letting people know there not the only people in the world have experienced the same thing or near enough the same event.
